Abstract

Described is a 10Gbit/s transmission at 850nm realised using a 2km-long singlemode photonic crystal fibre and a directly modulated singlemode vertical surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Power penalty-free transmission was successfully achieved without an optical amplifier or a modulator.
