Abstract

A method is proposed for the synthesis of silica mesoporous crystals with 2D-rectangular p2gg symmetry by using an achiral cationic surfactant for structure-directing agent. The study observed that the mesostructure and morphology of the silica mesoporous crystal can be controlled by the NaOH or pH of the synthesis mixture. The structural characterization of the elliptical mesopores with 2D rectangular structure provide valuable information of transition-phase relationships with the chiral mesoporous crystals. It was observed that that formation of elliptical micelle can cause a structural changes. It was also observed that the chiral nematic phase can co-exist with 2D-hexagona, 2D-rectangular ribbon, and lamellar phases in lyotropic liquid-crystal system. The mesoscopic local structural distortion can provide information of selective chirality of 2D-hexagonal mesoporous silica.
