Abstract

Direct RF under sampling reception has been developed to reduce the size and the power consumption of the terrestrial wireless terminals. We applied this reception method to Ku-band very small aperture terminal (VSAT). In this paper, we develop a CMOS sample and hold (S/H) IC for Ka-band VSAT receiver. Since Ka-band VSAT requires higher RF frequency operation (19.4 - 20.2 GHz) and wider system bandwidth (800 MHz) than the Ku-band one, high isolation series/shunt sampling switch, reactive on-chip matching circuit for RF input and high speed sampling clock circuit are needed. The proposed S/H IC is designed and fabricated in 90 nm CMOS process. The fabricated IC performs the |S11| of lower than -19.4 dB and the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) of higher than 27.3 dB in the reception system bandwidth of Ka-band VSAT (19.4 - 20.2 GHz).
