Abstract
An experimental method has been developed for the measurement of vapor—liquid equilibrium (VLE) of a mixture of volatile liquids. Direct observation is made of (1) the temperature, T, with a thermocouple, (2) the liquid mole fractions, x, by accurately metering the pure liquid feeds to the equilibrium cell, and (3) the vapor mole fractions, y, by means of GC analysis of a vapor sample carried off by helium gas from the cell. The equilibrium pressure, p, is calculated from the directly observed T, x, and y data. Possible effect of helium on y was tested by varying the pressure of helium and was found to be insignificant in all cases. Test x—y data on benzene + cyclohexane mixture agreed with literature values.
