A proposal of eddy current monitoring for advanced plant maintenance

Abstract

This paper shows some experimental results we conducted for evaluating the performance of a monitoring system using eddy current testing (ECT) technique. The ECT signals were observed while cyclic tensile loads were applied to a specimen with a V-notch or a semi-elliptical slot. Also, finite element analyses were performed to compare the monitoring signals obtained in laboratory experiments and computations for showing the possibility to predict crack propagation from observed monitoring signals based on the results of finite element analysis. The results shown in this paper indicate that eddy current monitoring (ECM) provides a good possibility of monitoring crack propagation quantitatively.
