Absence of in-plane fourfold anisotropy in Nd2-xCexCuO4 single crystal

Angular dependences ρ(θ) of the resistivity in the magnetic field applied to the ab plane have been precisely measured on electron doped Nd-Ce-Cu-O single crystals. ρ(θ) shows the twofold anisotropy. A sharp dip, which originates from the Josephson vortex pinning denoted by the activation energy enhancement of the vortex, appears only for H||[1 0 0] and no anomaly is observed for H||[0 1 0]. The direction in which ρ(θ) shows the dip depends on the sample. Any trace of the fourfold anisotropy is not observed at all on the contrary to the results in the hole doped system. The absence of the fourfold anisotropy in the ab plane supports the insistence that the superconducting pairing has not d-wave symmetry in the Nd-Ce-Cu-O crystal. In the hole doped La-Sr-Cu-O system the fourfold in-plane anisotropy is clearly observed and it is pointed out that the anisotropy is enhanced with increase of the anisotropic parameter γ.
