Abstract
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology has been widely used to analyze the composition and distribution of microbial communities, both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. This review presents the activated sludge treatment tactics applied FISH technology, formulates influence of the technology on the composition, structure and function of bacterial communities, argues some major weak points and offers suggestions for future directions in applying the technology targeting and sensitivity designs.
