Abstract
The advantages of using a Top-Drive Drilling System (TDS), for the high temperature geothermal well WD-1a drilled in Kakkonda, Japan, was introduced in 1995. Since that time, TDS has become more popular with geothermal developers and drilling companies. Five geothermal wells were drilled using a TDS in 2002 and a total of 13 geothermal wells have been drilled using TDS since 1995 in Japan. First, this paper reviews the advantages of using TDS in Kakkonda, and then discusses other drilling experience using TDS in Sumikawa and Okuaizu geothermal areas.
