Abstract
All-optical subharmonic clock extraction can be obtained by injecting the 40 Gb/s optical data pulses into a 10 GHz monolithic mode-locked laser diodes (MLLD) while all-optical demultiplexing (DEMUX) can be accomplished to gate optical data pulses by the extracted subharmonic clock pulses. Optical gate operation was obtained by using the absorption saturation in the saturable absorber (SA) section in the MLLD. These two signal processing functions indicate that MLLD can be applied in the development of practical optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technologies in ultrahigh-capacity optical communication systems.
