Abstract
By using a monoclonal antibody and polyclonal antibodies to human β amyloid precursor protein (APP), we immunohistochemically examined axonal swellings (spheroids). The immunoreactivity of APP was observed in numerous spheroids, which were found around the areas of old cerebral infarctions, in the globus pallidus with Hallervorden-Spatz disease as well as in or around brain abscesses. The axonal swellings were not immunolabeled with β protein. These results implied that APP accumulated in spheroids regardless of β protein depositions.
