N2 - Novel applications of bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) in CO2 capture and sequestration are put forward. A CO2 capture process consisting of a combination of chemical absorption with BMED was developed. By using this process, the power requirement for CO2 recovery was reduced to 2.4 MJ/kg. An aqueous mineral carbonation process utilizing BMED was then developed. BMED was used to generate nitric acid sodium hydroxide from sodium nitrate. The generated nitric acid and sodium hydroxide were used for the extraction of calcium from mineral compounds and the absorption of CO2, respectively. Extracted calcium and absorbed CO2 were reacted by mixing both solutions to form the calcium carbonate. The proposed processes are capable to immobilize CO2 with cyclic use of nitric acid and sodium hydroxide.
