Abstract
Anaerobic hydrogen fermentation has been extensively investigated recently with the focus of the new research being how to maintain stable and continuous hydrogen production and achieve a high yield. This paper reviews the new developments in the studies of hydrogen-producing bacteria, the pre-treatment of seed microorganisms, the hydrogen fermentation reactor and analysis of the microbial community based on both domestic literature and foreign journals. It is suggested that the two-stage fermentation process combining thermophilic hydrogen fermentation and methane fermentation with the recirculation of the digested sludge warrants further development.
