Abstract

We have examined the bistability condition of a circular magnetic dot by extending Thiele's bubble domain theory for an infinite continuous film to a finite one, and have found that the dot is always bistable at least when its diameter is D ≤ 4 /, where / is the characteristic length given by / = σw/4πMa2w: wall energy per unit area, Ma: saturation magnetization). This domain theory naturally explains the dot size dependence of the nucleation field without any assumptions.
