Abstract

The cold spray (CS) technique is a new coating technology that is based on the high velocity impinging of small solid particles on substrates. CS technique allows producing thick deposits at lower thermal load levels on the part. The previous research showed cold sprayed thick deposits exhibited unique mechanical properties. The coating exhibited brittle-like fracture characterized by crack propagation at particle interface. Brittle-like fracture is not suitable for structural applications. In order to use cold sprayed coatings for structural applications with reliability design, the reason of brittle-like fracture should be understood. This study investigated the new evaluation method of the particle interface, which used confidence index and image quality of electron backscatter diffraction method. This method may allow to describe the characteristic differences between particle interface and grain boundary.
