Characterization of super-precision microgear made of Ni-based metallic glass

In order to apply for microgeared-motor, the properties of the microgear made of bulk metallic glasses (MG) were investigated. A three dimensional microgear with a complicated shape made of Ni-based MG was prepared by the precision die-casting technique. The cast MG microgear exhibited excellent mechanical properties resulting from their glassy structure and three dimensional constructions. The surface of the cast MG microgear was well imprinted to the die surface even on a nanometer scale. In addition, the microgeared-motor of 2.4 mm in diameter assembled by the cast MG microgear shows superior durability due to the high wear resistance of the cast MG microgear.
