Abstract

To determine the chemical state of P at grain boundaries, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used. Fe-P alloy specimens with P concentration between 0. 05 and 15. 6 mass% were measured in a vacuum. XPS of the segregated P was identical to that in Fe//3P. This result supports the Losch model for grain boundary decohesion by P. The shape of the AES spectrum of P in solid solution varies with concentration, but that of segregated P is independent of concentration and identical to that in Fe//3P.
