Abstract

The magnetization process and microstructure of FePt (001) films with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were analyzed. The sample films were synthesized by co-sputtering Pt and Fe directly onto heated single crystalline MgO (001) substrates using a high vacuum multiple dc-sputtering system. The structural characteristics of the films were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction with Cu-Kα radiation. The results show that the value of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is constant although the magnetic domain structure changes from single-to multidomain state, and thus show that magnetization process depends on the film morphology.
