Compositional dependence of apatite formation for PMMA-based bone cement

The sol-gel derived bioactive CaO-SiO2 powder was mixed into PMMA bone cement to induce apatite forming ability on it. Using simulated body fluid (SBF) with ion concentrations nearly equal to those of the human blood plasma, the apatite forming ability of the rectangular cements were investigated. It was observed that when the gel powders replaced PMMA powder at 10 ∼ 30xt.%, the cements were hardened after mixing for about 8 ∼ 7 mins. It was found that the apatite forming ability for the novel PMMA-based cement is accelerated with the content of bioactive sol-gel derived 20CaO80SiO2 gels.
