In view of the environmental problems in Japan, Japanese steel industry has endeavored to reduce environmental loads through research and development on recycling of wastes aiming at recycling-based society. Since the steel production process consumes a large amount of fossil raw material and energy, the role of the steel industry is still important. Actually, to contribute to environmental protection, advanced cooperation with domestic society and other related industries should be realized under the conception of "Eco-unit" based on steel works as core plant. These efforts lead to preventing global warming. Waste plastics recycling using blast furnace and coke oven has been successfully commercialized on the basis of fundamental researches. Totally, Japanese steel industry has begun searching for a new paradigm of the steel production process for the purpose of the global environment and coexistence with regional society.
