Abstract

Pr3Pd20Ge6 and Nd3Pd20Ge6 crystallize in the cubic C6Cr23-type structure, which possesses two non-equivalent crystallographic sites for Pr and Nd atoms. We have succeeded in growing single crystals of these compounds. The magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out using them. In Pr3Pd20Ge6, the analysis of magnetic properties by the crystalline field (CF) effect model implies that the ground state of the 4f electron is the Γ3 non-Kramers doublet for at least one of the two crystallographic sites. On the other hand, the magnetic properties of Nd3Pd20Ge6 are well explained by the CF effect model with the 4f electrons having the Σ8(1) ground state.
