N2 - By systematically studying the Mg-Zn-Sm alloy system, a new hexagonal phase with cell parameters a=33.6 and c=8.9 angstrom was found near the known hexagonal phase μ-MgZnSm and the icosahedral quasicrystal. The new hexagonal phase was found to have an a-axis seven times that of MgZn2 and its structure was described by a linkage of seven icosahedra along the a-axis. The new hexagonal phase is abbreviated as μ7-MgZnSm and another hexagonal phase is named μ3-MgZnSm.
