Abstract

Directionally solidified eutectic fiber samples in the Al2O 3/Y3Al5O12 (corundum/YAG) system were produced by using the micro-pulling down (μ-PD) method. The "Chinese script" microstructure was produced in present fiber samples and the corresponding crystallographic orientation relationship [0 0 1] corundum // [1 1 2̄]YAG perpendicular to the solidification direction was clarified by the ordinary single crystal X-ray diffraction. This crystallographic orientation was suggested to be an essential one featured in directionally solidified Al2O3/Y 3Al5O12 eutectics.
