Abstract

The decomposition of spinel MgAl//2O//4 into oxide mixture is shown experimentally to take place at the pressure between 200 and 300 kbar by means of MASS-318 type pressure generating apparatus. The phase boundary of this reaction is calculated to be 153 kbar at 1000 degree C based on the reliable thermodynamic data. The presence of discrepancy in the equilibrium pressures between MgAl//2O//4 and the isochemical oxide mixture illustrates the necessity of developing the method of accurate pressure determination at the extremely high pressure and high temperature.
