Abstract

Network support is essential to provide a quality multimedia presentation for a large-scale video archival and retrieval system. This paper proposes an efficient video delivery method based on the concept of active networks, for the multiple thumbnail video digest display system that we have been developing to solve two problems: (i) half of the users stopped their requests near the beginning of the video playback; and (ii) a large amount of time was consumed for retrieving a video. In the simulations conducted at our research lab, the video server load can be reduced by around 40%, and the total waiting time for receiving all the grouped videos that clients may experience can also be reduced significantly.
