Abstract

The R&D program on a large current negative ion source has been carried out at National Institute for Fusion Science for Large Helical Device Project. So far a 1/3-scaled model ion source has been examined. By seeding a small amount of cesium in discharge, we obtained a total current of 8.5 A with the extracting energy of 40 keV. 1.2 A of high density negative ion beam was obtained from the restricted area of the source with the current density of 54 mA/cm2. An engineering test of vacuum-immersed source has also been performed.
