Development of the pneumatically driven total artificial heart with low cost and high durability

When performed trial manufacture to implant total artificial heart (TAH) pump system in pleural cavity, we carried out the design which, in particular, paid attention to the durability and economy. We adopted pneumatically driven sac-type artificial heart; the configuration of the sac was decided by flow visualization analysis. It was designed in configuration near by round with a little stagnation and turbulent flow. Sac body was made using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) paste. PVC paste was poured into external mold, and it was heated with hot wind drying oven. Coating was performed of the inside by polyurethane. Basic character was inspected with moc circulation circuit, and fitting study by the acute experiment which used a goat was carried out. As for TAH which produced it experimentally, the pump output which exceeded 5.0 l/min in moc circulation circuit was provided. Implantation was possible to pleural cavity internal in the healthy adult goat of 55 kg in weight easily comparatively. It is thought that design refined a few more by connector part is desirable, and it is improved currently. Furthermore, chronic experiment of TAH will be carried out, and examination will want to be repeated in future.
