Abstract

Indication quality of liquid crystal display (LCD) is governed by alignment properties of liquid crystal molecule enclosed in their devices. Therefore, "rubbing process - rubbing on the anchoring surface of liquid crystal with rubbing cloth -," which controls alignment of liquid crystal molecule, has been recognized as an important and base technology in the industrial production of high performance liquid crystal devices. In this paper, new method named "tribo-system vibrating method" for evaluation of rubbing cloth properties such as stiffness, filament direction and their uniformity, which directly affect the alignment of liquid crystal molecule, is developed. Furthermore, "Evaluation map of rubbing cloth" constructed by this new method, which can evaluate uniformity of stiffness and filament direction quantitatively, is introduced. The availability of this map as objective and quantitative evaluation method of rubbing cloth for LCD is shown experimentally.
