Abstract

• Direct analysis of saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) was performed by using a q-MS combined with a SPI source. • Mass spectrum of saturated hydrocarbons provided an unique molecular ion of [M + O – 3H]+ with little or no fragmentation. • A deuterated solvent was used to reveal ionization reactions of alkanes. • Simultaneous analysis of multiple n-alkanes was performed.
