Abstract

The structure of a surface-oxidized Co-Cr film for perpendicular magnetic recording media is investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy. It is found that an oxidized Co-Cr film has a distinct duplex oxide scale on its surface when oxida- tion is carried out at relatively high temperature (〜400oC). From the outermost surface of the film, a CoO-dominant ox- ide scale and Cr203-dominant oxide scale are formed on the Co-Cr alloy film in order.
