Effect of plasma carburizing treatment on pitting corrosion resistance of type 304 stainless steel

Abstract

Pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels was improved by plasma carburizing at low temperatures. From anodic polarization, carburized stainless steels showed higher pitting potential than that of untreated stainless steels, and no stable pit was generated. Inclusions acted as initiation sites for metastable pits, but no stable pit was observed on the carburized stainless steels. It is likely that active dissolution of steel matrix was suppressed by the interstitial carbon.
