Abstract

Deeply bound Is states of π- as well as the 2p states in 207Pb were identified in the 208Pb(d,3He) reaction at 600 MeV. The binding energies of π- in 207Pb have been determined as Sπ(2p) = 5.31 ± 0.09 MeV and Bπ(1s) = 7.1 ± 0.2 MeV by comparing the observed Q-value spectrum with theory. These values indicate that the effective π- mass increases by 19.3 ± 2.7 MeV at the center of the 207Pb nucleus.
