Abstract
The effects of circulating trapped energetic ions (TEI) on sawtooth oscillations were observed. The effects of the circulating energetic ions (CEI) on sawtooth oscillations were found to be different from the well known purely stabilizing effects of the TEI on sawtooth oscillations. Toroidal circulation of co-CEI provided an additional sink of free energy and stabilized the mode, whereas the circulation of counter-CEI provided an additional source of free energy and destabilized the mode.
