Abstract

Three MO precursors, (NH4)6Mo7O24,H3PMo12O40 and MoO2(acac)2 (acacH is acetylacetone), have been used to prepare SiO2-supported Mo catalysts. SiO2 was pretreated with either KCl or K2CO3. The effects of these Mo precursors on the activity and product selectivity of the Mo catalysts in CO hydrogenation were examined at 16 kg cm-2 and 573 K. Selectivity for alcohols vs hydrocarbons was greatly influenced by the precursors and K salts. Catalysts prepared from (NH4)6Mo7O24 and supported on KCl-treated SiO2 had the highest activity and selectivity for alcohols. Catalysts repared from MoO2(acac)2 produced mainly hydrocarbons. The observed changes in activity and selectivity with preparation method seem to be governed by the oxidation state of Mo.
