This paper first develops a theoretical electroelastic fracture mechanics for piezoelectric ceramics. Both analytical and simulation methods are formulated to determine the effect of electric field on the fracture mechanics parameters such as stress intensity factor, energy release rate and energy density factor for exact and impermeable crack models. Then the results of fracture experiments and corresponding finite element analyses of P-7 piezoelectric ceramic are presented. Finally, the validity of the exact model for predicting the fracture mechanics parameters is evaluated by comparison with experimental results.
