N2 - A principle was established to estimate the equilibrium distribution ratio of impurity element X (As, Sb, Sn or Fe) between NaO0.5 -CO2XOv/2 slag and molten copper defined by {(mass% of X in slag) / {mass % of X in metal)}, over a wide range of the slag composition as a function of temperature and partial pressures of CO2 and oxygen. According to the principle, the following measurements were conducted on the thermodynamic properties of the slag: (1) Electrochemical measurements of activity of NaO0.5, (2) Activity measurements of XOv/2 by slag/metal equilibrium technique, (3) Solubility measurements of CO2 and (4) Redox equilibrium measurements of XOv/2 by slag/gas equilibrium technique, and (5) Determination of the equilibrium phase relationships. Based on the results, the distribution ratios of the impurity elements between the slag and molten copper could be successfully estimated. And the procedure for reducing down these impurity elements to the level of high purity copper by using Na2 CO3 slag was discussed.
