Abstract

The technology to genetically manipulate adult stem cells has increasingly become important in terms of basic biological and medical researches on stem cells as well as cell therapy with genetically engineered cells. A non-viral gene carrier of polysaccharides with a cell specificity was explored by making use of sugar-recognition receptors on the cell surface for enhanced gene expression. Significantly higher gene expression by the polysaccharide carrier was achieved for bone marrow-derived stem cells than the LipofectAMINE™ commercially available.
