Abstract

The local atomic structures around Pt as well as Zr in amorphous and quasicrystalline Zr70Al6Ni10Pt14 are determined anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method. Their distinctive structural features are clarified to find a clue to the mechanism of formation of the quasicrystalline phase. A ribbon sample 0.3 nm thick and 1 mm wide is produced by melt-spinning from the alloy which is prepared by arc melting a mixture of pure metals in an argon atmosphere.
