Abstract

The propagation rate of fatigue cracking, da/dN, was measured in center-cracked specimens made of 60 Sn/40 Pb solder under cyclic loading conditions at three frequencies (0.01, 0.1, 1.0 Hz). The measured rates were correlated with the cyclic -integral values, δJp-8, calculated from the load-displacement hysteresis loops for the solder. The measured crack-propagation rates under the three frequencies were correlated by a line given by da/dn(mm/cycIe)=8.5x l0-4J[δJp-8(N/mm)] 1.5.To estimate the life of a solder joint by using cyclic I-integral δJFEM calculated using the elasto-plastic finite element method, a parameter,δJFEMδJFEM which was proposed in other works, was used. The parameter,δJFEMgave good agreement with δJp-8 at three frequencies.
