Abstract

The changes in the local atomic environment during the crystallization of zirconium (Zr)-based glassy alloys were analyzed. The changes were studied by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The formation of quasicrystalline phase was observed in the Zr70Cu29Pd 1 glassy alloy during annealing. The results show good correlation between the existence of local icosahedral short-range order and the stability of supercooled liquid state.
