Hydrogenation of Nb-Si alloys containing 66-88 at.% Nb was carried out in an arc-melting chamber directly after arc-melting. It occurs without any surface activation treatment for the alloys at compositions ranging from 70 to 85 at.% Nb and causes violent disintegration. In consequence, fine particles with an average particle size of 90 μm formed simultaneously. The collection ratio of particles under 100 mesh for these alloys is from 20 to 88 wt% with increasing Nb content from 70 to 85 at.%. The collected particles have a sharp-edged polygonal shape and consist of Nb hydrides and Nb5Si3 with a small amount of unknown phases.
