Abstract
The femtosecond fluorescence in blue- and red-phase polydiacetylenes (PDA) was studied and the decay kinetics was compared with the relaxation model. The cast film of PDA-4BMCU was red phase and had an excitonic absorption peak at 2.3 eV. Since Stokes shift of the fluorescence in red phase was small and similar with that in blue phase, the fluorescence was expected to be due to free exciton. However, the decay kinetics corresponded to the relaxation from self trapped exciton (STE) to the ground state. Therefore, the fluorescence in red phase was assigned to STE and small Stokes shift indicated small relaxation energy of STE in red phase.
