Abstract

Distributed erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (DEDFAs) offer the very attractive prospect of achieving ultralong lossless transmission lines.1, 2 We have recently reported the femtosecond soliton transmission characteristics of an 18.2 km-long DEDFA.3 Optical solitons have attracted a lot of attention as information carriers in ultrahigh speed optical communication systems. However, nonlinear interaction between solitons may result in a significant reduction of the bandwidth of a soliton-based optical communication system.4,
