Fretting-corrosion behaviour of Ti alloy in the presence of albumin

Abstract

Fretting-corrosion behaviour between a Ti-6Al-4V specimen and an alumina ball in the presence of albumin was investigated in HEPES (Hydroxyethyl piperazinyl ethanesulfonic acid) buffer saline solution with and without albumin of 1.0 g/l. The temperature of the solution was kept at 310±1 K. The specimen was polarized at 0.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) through the fretting. The fretting oscillation with a displacement of 100 μm and a frequency of 1 Hz was applied under the normal force of 10 N and 30 N. The frictional coefficient and current during fretting did not significantly change with albumin. On the other hand, the frictional coefficient decreased and the current increased with the increase of normal force. It is suggested that other chemical factor than albumin, such as the oxidation of surface, dominates the fretting-corrosion behaviour of titanium alloy. In addition, mechanical factor such as normal force is an important factor in the fretting-corrosion of titanium alloy.
