Abstract

When contact failure occurs in a connector of coaxial HF signal transmission line, electromagnetic field is radiated around the line. The authors have measured the electromagnetic field and examined a method to control such radiation. The result shows that the strength of radiation is related to contact resistance and distribution of contact points at the connector. When contact resistance is low, radiation is observed at the resonant frequency related to the length of the transmission line, and radiation is high for connectors with axially asymmetric contact points. The discussion shows that if contact points in a connector are kept axially symmetrical with lower resistance than 0.38Ω, the electromagnetic interference caused by the connector contact failure is low.
