Abstract
This chapter describes a brief overview of present advances and challenges in PET methodology from the engineering side. Topics are as follows: (1) advances in hardware design and sophisticated software development for registering PET and anatomical images, (2) higher spatial resolution approaching sub-millimeters, (3) improved temporal resolution, (4) repeat assessment of physiologic functions, (5) corrections for partial volume effect (PVE), and (6) motion correction capability. These features provide potentials of using PET in new application fields.
