Gas evolution behavior during fracture of alumina

The analysis of gases evolved from three kinds of Al2O3 during four-point bending tests was performed under ultra-high vacuum using a quadrupole mass spectrometer in a rapid scan mode. The gases such as H2, CH4, N2, Ar and CO2 were evolved at the moment of fracture from two kinds of polycrystalline Al2O3, while the mass peak for N2 was very weak and no peak for Ar was observed from single-crystal Al2O3. It is clear that N2 and Ar are the main gases trapped inside polycrystalline Al2O3.
