Abstract

This chapter introduces the phenomenon of grain growth in melt. To understand the kinetics of phase transformation from a liquid phase to a solid phase from a macroscopic viewpoint, the Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation will be explained first. Next, a general expression of the growth rate of crystal grain in melt growth and the growth mechanism of a faceted dendrite, which is often observed in the growth of a multicrystalline Si ingot, will be described. Finally, the grain growth phenomenon that occurs during unidirectional growth will be introduced.
