Abstract
The growth of Yb3+ -doped YAlO3 single crystals by the Czochralski method with a radio-frequency heating system was studied. For a growth rate of 1.0 mm/h, the best Yb3+ doped YAlO3 single crystals were obtained. The effective segregation coefficient of the Yb ion was estimated to investigate the homogeneity. The results show that very fast charge transfer luminescence of Yb3+ from the near ultraviolet to visible spectral range and the high density of the Yb-rich YAlO3, makes this material suitable for fast scintillators.
