Abstract

Micro crystals of terbium aluminum garnet (Tb3Al5O12) have been grown using the micro-pulling-down technique. Crystals grown from stoichiometric and near-stoichiometric melts contained noticeable amounts of the perovskite TbAlO3 whereas single-phase garnet crystals were obtained from melts with less than 32.1 mol% Tb2O3. Chemical composition analysis suggests that the crystals are not stoichiometric but contain an appreciable excess of terbium corresponding to the formula Tb3.058Al4.942O12.
