Abstract

Potential applications of mode-locked laser diode (MLLD) devices were demonstrated to high-speed optical communication and optical measurement. The features of these devices were due to the rigid control of nonlinear-optical properties inside them. An optical-sampling-based pump-probe measurement of the absorption recovery time was performed in a semiconductor waveguide saturable absorber (SWSA), which was a part of MLLD device. Results revealed that the longer time-constant limited the overall recovery speed of the absorption and caused a harmful pattern effect in the random optical-pulse operation when the SWSA was used as an optical gate-switching device.
